On this One Day Cruise to Aegina – Poros – Hydra upon arrival to Piraeus you will receive a warm welcome from our Officers and Hostesses who will assist you with boarding one of our luxurious cruise ships and invite you to proceed either to the Main Lounge, where our live orchestra has already started putting you in the right mood with its international music repertoire, or to one of the spacious open decks where you can enjoy the fascinating view as the ship leaves the port.

At 08:00 am the One Day Cruise ship sails from the Port of Piraeus for the three beautiful islands of the Saronic Gulf.
The order in which we shall visit the islands is either Poros – Hydra – Aegina or Aegina – Poros – Hydra which does not change the duration of stay on any of the islands.
Shortly after departure, our multi-lingual guides and hostesses will invite you to assemble in one of the Lounges, in order to give you all necessary information concerning the ship, the cruise program as well as the islands. This will also be an opportunity for you to get answers to any questions you might have, as our trained staff is there to ensure that you will have a most wonderful day.

Within 2 hours, we will arrive to the island of Poros, the smallest of the three islands, separated from the Peloponnese by a narrow strait and offering a most enchanting view of Poros Town. Your time at leisure in Poros to scroll around the small picturesque streets of the island town, will be about 50 minutes.

Immediately upon the ships departure from Poros, lunch will be served for passengers who have the first sitting. As we sail towards Hydra the remaining guests relax in the Ship’s Lounge in happy hour or enjoy the sun and beautifulpanoramic view from one of our spacious decks.

An hour and 15 minutes later, we enter the port of Hydra, whose amphitheater shape once served as a safe shelter for Saronic Pirates. From the decks, you will be able to admire the very special architecture and dramatic landscapes of this island, whose old traditional stone houses and mansions silently stand witness to a long and turbulent history.

As soon as you disembark, it’s all there… the small narrow stone-paved streets waiting to be explored on foot or by the island’s traditional “vehicle” – the saddled donkey.. captivating walks along the old seaside promenade.. crystal clear waters… radiant traditional fine-craft shops.. the beauty of Hydra will conquer you forever!

You will have about 1 hour and 30 minutes at leisure to enjoy the unique charms of Hydra and while returning back on board you will receive a homecoming welcome. The tables will be set for the second sitting giving you an opportunity to taste the gastronomic creations of our Chef. After your meal relax with our orchestra and singers, and have a good laugh with our entertainers!
As you sail on George and his dancers will make you dance to Greek rhythms.

Time will fly quickly….and after a two hour trip we shall arrive to our last port of call, the island of Aegina.

AEGINA is the largest of the three islands. Apart from its harbor there are numerous interesting sites to discover on the island and therefore we propose

1. The first possibility is a Guided Bus Tour of the island, starting with a visit to the Temple of Afea which is the best preserved temple in Greece and one of the 3 temples forming the famous “Sacred Triangle” of Greek antiquity.Built on top of a wooded hill, it offers the most magnificent view over the island, the Saronic Gulf, Piraeus and Salamina Island.Our guide will tell you the fascinating story of the intriguing history of this beautiful site and then from there take you for a short visit to the Church of Saint Nectarios, where you can enjoy quiet moments contemplation and admiration of its beautiful Byzantine architecture.

The drive back to Aegina Port will give you time relax and appreciate the exquisite peaceful nature of the island.

2. The second possibility is a Panoramic Bus Tour, giving you the opportunity to drive across the entire island (without visiting the archaeological site) admiring the beauty of its nature, the islands medieval capital of Paleohora, the Church of Saint Nectarios, the pistachio groves…The tour ends with a stop by the seaside where you can relax and enjoy a glass of Ouzo along with a choice of irresistible Greek “Mezedes” (appetizers)!

3. The third choice is to stay in Aegina and enjoy a walk or horse-carriage ride around the town or relax in one of the harbor’s charming waterfront coffee shops.

Στις 08:00 αναχωρούμε για τα 3 πιο όμορφα νησιά του Αργοσαρωνικού.

Λίγα λεπτά μετά την αναχώρηση της Μονοήμερης κρουαζιέρας, ένας από τους ξεναγούς και πλοιοσυνοδούς θα σας ζητήσουν να συγκεντρωθείτε σε ένα από τα σαλόνια του πλοίου για να γνωριστείτε και να σας δώσουν όλες τις πληροφορίες σχετικά με το πλοίο, το πρόγραμμα της κρουαζιέρας και τα νησιά ώστε να γίνει όσο το δυνατόν πιο ευχάριστη η ημέρα σας.

Σε 2 περίπου ώρες φθάνουμε στον Πόρο που παρ’ ότι είναι το πιο μικρό από τα 3 νησιά έχει σαν πόλο έλξης το στενό κανάλι που χωρίζει το νησί από τις ακτές της Πελοποννήσου και το γνωστό Λεμονοδάσος όπου προσφέρει μία καταπληκτική θέα στους επισκέπτες.
Παραμονή στον Πόρο περίπου 50 λεπτά.

Αναχωρώντας από τον Πόρο, οι επιβάτες που έχουν επιλέξει να γευματίσουν στην πρώτη σειρά θα περάσουν στο εστιατόριο του πλοίου και οι υπόλοιποι στο σαλόνι ή στα καταστρώματα θα απολαύσουν τον ήλιο, τη καταγάλανη θάλασσα και τη θέα ταξιδεύοντας προς την Ύδρα.

Σε μία ώρα και 15 λεπτά, με την είσοδό μας στο λιμάνι της Ύδρας, αντικρίζουμε τη νησιώτικη πολιτεία της και τα πανέμορφα σπίτια με τη χαρακτηριστική αρχιτεκτονική που απλώνονται αμφιθεατρικά μπροστά μας. Μόλις αποβιβαστούμε και αρχίσετε να περπατάτε στα γραφικά δρομάκια της Ύδρας ή να κάνετε μία βόλτα με τα γαιδουράκια, τότε η γνωριμία με αυτό το νησί θα σας συναρπάσει.

Μετά από 1 ώρα και 30 λεπτά παραμονής στην Ύδρα επιστρέφουμε στο πλοίο όπου μας περιμένει το τραπέζι στρωμένο με μοναδικά εδέσματα, τις γαστρονομικές δημιουργίες του CHEF για να γευματίσουμε.
Η ορχήστρα με το χορευτικό συγκρότημά μας ανάβει το γλέντι με χορούς, ελληνικά και ξένα τραγούδια και ο καταπληκτικός μίμος να μας διασκεδάσει.

Μετά από 2 ώρες φτάνουμε στην Αίγινα.
Η Αίγινα είναι το μεγαλύτερο από τα 3 νησιά και επειδή έχει πολλά ενδιαφέροντα εκτός του λιμανιού σας προσφέρουμε 3 επιλογές με τις εκδρομές που διοργανώνουμε (όπου θα μπορέσετε να δηλώσετε συμμετοχή κατά τη διάρκεια της κρουαζιέρας).

Η πρώτη εκδρομή είναι με πούλμαν στο Ναό της Αφαίας, ξενάγηση στον αρχαιολογικό χώρο του Ναού που είναι σύγχρονος του Παρθενώνα και μέρος του Ιερού Τριγώνου της αρχαιότητας.
Χτισμένος πάνω στην κορυφή του λόφου που δεσπόζει στην περιοχή της Αγίας Μαρίνας με μοναδική θέα την Αθήνα, τον Πειραιά και τη Σαλαμίνα.

Η ξεναγός θα σας δώσει όλες τις πληροφορίες και στη συνέχεια μία στάση στην μοναστήρι του Αγίου Νεκταρίου για να ανάψουμε ένα κεράκι και να απολαύσουμε την αρχιτεκτονική και τη διακόσμηση της εκκλησίας.

Διασχίζοντας το νησί βλέπετε τις ομορφιές του και επιστρέφετε στην πόλη της Αίγινας.

Η δεύτερη εκδρομή είναι ο πανοραμικός γύρος του νησιού με πούλμαν.

Aegina is one of the islands in the Saronic Gulf, just 17 miles (27 km) from Athens. The island, along with offshore islets, comprises the Municipality of Aegina in Piraeus Prefecture, a part of the Attica region. The capital is the town of Aegina (pop. 7,410 in 2001 census), situated at the northwestern end of the island. Due to its proximity to Athens, it is a popular quick getaway during the summer months, with quite a few Athenians owning second houses on the island.

The people of this island have always been involved with the sea: either as fishermen, sailors or shipbuilders. Some are also farmers, and they grow olives, pistachio nuts and fruit. The town of Aegina has many attractions; a ride through the town with a horse carriage is a nice experience and a good way to enjoy the sights of the capital. The town has many interesting buildings and neoclassical houses; among them is the first Greek government building, the Orphanage building that was founded by the first governor of Greece Ioannis Kapodistrias.

According to mythology, Aegina island was a beautiful princess with whom Zeus fell in love with. In order to be alone with her, he took her to this uninhabited island, and they had a son, Aeacus, who became the first king. The island was inhabited in the Neolithic period, as can be seen from the finds at Kolona, near the town of Aegina, which date from around 3000 BC. Later, the Minoans came to the island, to be followed by the Achaeans and the Dorians.
From the middle of the second millennium BC, Aegina began to develop its trade and at the same time emerged as a strong naval power. Ships carried the products of the island, chiefly ceramics, to the Cyclades, Crete and mainland Greece. Ιt reached the zenith of its development during the 6th century BC, when, as an independent power, it was the first city of the western world to mint coins. In spite of the fact that Aegina island was a rival of Athens, it helped the Athenians in their victory against the Persian fleet at the Naval- Battle of Salamis.

The Athenians, who had never trusted it, finally seized the island in the mid of the 5th century BC. The subsequent history of the island follows roughly the same course with the rest of Greece. The Aegina island made an important contribution to the struggle against the Turks in 1821, and Aegina was the seat of the first Greek government, under Kapodistria, before being succeeded in this role by Nauplio.

Because of its important position in antiquity (Aegina island was a rival to Athens, the great sea power of the era) there are still many ancient sites to see, the most famous being the temple of Athena Afea from the 6th century BC. Surrounded by pine trees, on a hilltop above the town of Agia Marina, this Doric temple, built around 490 BC. is the best preserved classical temple in the Greek islands. Dedicated to the Cretan nymph Aphaia, it predates the Parthenon in Athens by around sixty years. The temple was part of a pre-Christian, equilateral holy triangle of temples including the Athenian Parthenon and the temple of Poseidon at Sounion.

Aegina island is famous for growing of pistachio. Pistachio trees have been caltivated in Aegina island since 1860, later speading to otherparts of Attica and Greece. Throughout Aegina, the dominant variety is known by the name ” Aeginis”, or “koilarati” meaning ” round”, a variety considered high-yieding and of a quality lacking in foreign varieties. The ideal climate of the island and the unique soil composition lend exceptional flavour and aroma to the Aegina pistachio. This has distinquished it from other pistachios and earning well-deserved recognition as the finestpistachio in the world. The exclusive right to identify the pistachio as “Aegina pistachio” was secured by the E.U. regulation of 1263/96, protecting the local pistachio from those of other regions.

A very interesting place to visit is the monastery of Ag. Nektarios. The saint himself is buried here, and is said to hold miraculous, healing powers. Very close to Ag. Nektarios monastery is located Palaeochora, which is an abandoned Byzantine town. Once, was the capital of Aegina island. In this area there are the ruins of a medieval castle.

In Aegina island also is the house where Nikos Kazantzakis the editor of Zorba the Greek lived for some years. Worth seeing is the mansion that hosted the first government of Greece under the leadership of Ioannis Kapodistrias.

The Temple of Afea (or Aphaea or Aphaia) is dedicated to the Greek goddess Afea and is one of the most important archaeological sites in Greece. It is located approximately 13 km east by road from the main port (town). It stands on the top of a hill covered by pine trees, offering excellent views of Aegina island and the Saronic Gulf. The Temple has an unusual plan and it used to have important sculptures, which are thought to illustrate the change from Archaic to Early Classical technique. These sculptures are now housed in Munich’s Sculpture Gallery. There are also a number of fragments exhibited in Aegina’s archaeological Museum and on the site’s Museum.

The setting is extremely beautiful, as is usually the case with places chosen by the ancient Greeks for their temples. Together with the Temple of Poseidon at Sounion and the Parthenon in Athens, it forms an equilateral triangle. It used to be thought that the sanctuary was dedicated to Hellenio Zeus, but after the Pedi mental sculptures were discovered it became apparent that it was dedicated to Athena. Ever since further angler’s excavations in 1901 the established opinion has been that the sanctuary, as indicated by an inscription found in the temple’s foundation, belonged to the Crete-Mycenaean deity Afea (invisible).

Afea is connected with the Minoan deity Britomartis, a friend of Artemis. She unwittingly provoked a burning passion in King Mitios, and while fleeing him, fell into the sea. Some fishermen caught her and brought her to Aegina, but as soon as she was on the island one of the fishermen pressed his advances upon her. She fled toward the woods of Artemis and then suddenly disappeared from the face of earth. The islanders dedicated a temple to her, and it is likely that the pre Hellenic cult of Afea, which came to Aegina island from Crete, eventually merged with the cult of Athena. It appears that the first temple, to which belongs the inscription found in the foundations and now in the Aegina Museum, dates from the 7th century B.C. It was a simple square building, of which there remain only a few foundations of the altar. In the early 6th century B.C. a temple in antis with a three aisled cella was on the same site. Several architectural fragments from the temple still survive, used as building material in later construction.

The temple we see today, one of the finest examples of Archaic architecture, was built ca. 490 B.C. It is constructed of local poros in the peripteral Doric style, with six columns on the short and twelve columns on the long sides. The columns incline slightly inwards and have a cushion beneath the capitals. A large door with marble pilasters led from the front porch to the cella, in which stood the gilded ivory and wood statue of the goddess. The space was divided by a double row of five columns into three aisles, which formed a two storied stoa on the north, east, and south sides of the cella. The coffered ceiling was decorated with golden stars, while the floor was covered with a thin red plaster, traces of which can still be seen. A smaller door, probably built later since it is not in the axis of the temple, leads to the rear porch. To the right and left of it are two square marble blocks between two vertical slabs, which may have been offering tables. The entire surface of the temple was covered with a yellowish plaster, and some architectural parts like the cornice and the pediment tympana were coloured. As soon as the temple was completed a new altar was built outside to the east and the sanctuary space enlarged with isodomic retaining walls. The temple and the altar were surrounded by an enclosure with an entrance on the south side. A new propylon was built, keeping roughly to the earlier plan and dimensions, with two stoas. The interior room was larger and led down four steps to the courtyard. The five large rooms and the two stoas east of the propylon must have been the priests’ quarters. All these buildings were surrounded by an enclosure with an entrance in the south. Further south, below the sanctuary entrance, are the foundations of a three-roomed house which probably served as a guest house. The temple was struck by lightning in 1969, toppling the southeast corner column. Since this time there has been a lightning conductor on the site.

Hydra is one of the Saronic islands, close to Athens. It is considered the most cosmopolitan, and many celebrities from Greece and abroad own houses here, or spend their vacations on this pretty island.

Hydra island is a very popular tourist destination, mainly due to its picturesque capital, of red tiled houses and narrow stone-paved streets. Once a major seafaring community, these days the islands wealth mainly comes from tourism, but fishermen and farmers can still be found. Because of its close proximity to Athens, many islanders go there to find work during the winter months.

In the 1950s the film Boy on a Dolphin was filmed on the island, and ever since an array of artists, writers and celebrities set up home on this little island off the Peloponnesian coast.

The town of Hydra is amphitheatrically arranged within a close bay situated approximately at the middle of the northern coast of the island. The town is surrounded by bare rocks and steep mountains. The first impression of the visitor as the ship reaches the port is the image of the high impressive old mansions overlooking the town. What follows is the view of the old defensive bastions with their canons on site, still protecting the town from remote and forgotten enemies. The spectacle is completed with the uncountable boats and yachts from any place of the world, mooring at the port. The town of Hydra is the unique settlement of the island; it counts some 3000 permanent residents and presents the originality that no vehicles are allowed within it. The people, locals and visitors, go from one place to another only on foot or on donkeys’ back.

There are a number of monasteries in the hills beyond the town, both over an hour’s hike away, but worthwhile for the views and the sense of history they provide.

Hydra island has been inhabited since pre historic times, and some believe it was the home of the Hydra – the horrible monster Heracles killed, thus its name. Little has been recorded of the island’s ancient history, but it is known that it played an important role in the 15th century, when people from the mainland and other islands sought refuge from attacking pirates and Turks.

Hydra island had an important fleet in the 18th century and it was sometimes called “Little England” because of its European flare and commerce. It was one of the strongest islands during the war of Independence which began in 1821, and contributed with its huge fleet of 130 ships. Many of the buildings around the harbour date back to the 18th century.

Poros is a small, volcanic little island of great beauty with rich vegetation. Much of the northern and far eastern/western sides of the island are bushy, whereas large areas of old pine forest are found in the south and center of the island. It is very close to Athens Greece, and is a popular summer resort to both Greeks and foreigners. Many Athenians have summerhouses here, which can be noticed in the weekends, since the island livens up a lot then.

The island’s name means narrow strait, and is separated from the Peloponnese and the picturesque town of Galatas by a 370 meters canal. It is considered a very romantic place, but is also great for families or backpackers. Poros island is a very green island, as the ferry approaches you can admire the pines that cover the small hills and the beaches. The town of Poros is build on the small peninsula of Sferia mainly on the small hill overlooking the port. Towards Mikro and Megalo Neorio you will find marinas for yachts and boats.

Recent studies suggest that Poros has been inhabited since the Bronze Age. Graves on the island have been dated to the Mycenaean period, and manmade structures have existed on it since at least 1000 BCE.

The god Poseidon was especially worshipped on the island that was called Kalavria during the Greek Antiquity. An ancient Myth tells that Poseidon gave as an exchange for Poros island, Delphi to Apollo because the island firstly belonged to the god of the Sun. Several excavations show that the island was inhabited from the prehistoric times and also during the Mycenaean times. Poros island had a peak period in the 6th-5th century BC especially when the temple of Poseidon became the main place of worship during the times of the Kalavrian union, a league between Athens, Nauplio, Aegina and other city states of that era. Because of its closeness to the mainland, Poros had commercial and political connections with both Athens and the Peloponnese. Demosthenes, the orator, took his life here according to tradition.

Poros island had many foreign rulers, just like the rest of Greece, through history. Because of Hydras power in the 18th century, Poros island was quite outshone, but the island contributed to the war of Independence that started in 1821. In Poros island where confirmed the first borders of Greece in a meeting between the fist Greek Governer Kapodistrias and the ambassadors of Great Britain, France and Russia in 1828. The fist naval base and shipyards of Greece after Greek Independence was founded in Poros as well as the first school of Naval cadets. The famous battle ship Averof was docked in Poros island until recent years, now the ship is docked in Faliro.

The ruins of the temple of Poseidon from the 6th century BC and the monastery Zoodochos Pigis (“Life-giving Source”) are the two proper sights on Poros island. There are also many old, interesting buildings in Poros town. The clocktower offers a breathtaking view, and it is nice just to stroll around here.

Adequate and modern communication networks reach all areas. Mobile phone network coverage in general is good in most parts of the country. The main operators are Vodafone, Cosmote and Telestet. You can purchase locally inexpensive phone cards for international calls and sim cards which will enable you to use your mobile phone locally. There are also many internet cafes in Athens and on most tourist destinations and Greek islands.

Culture
The majority of people in Greece are of Greek heritage with small populations of Turks, Bulgarians and other Europeans. Although more than half the population is classified as urban, rural life retains a powerful influence. A strong sense of community and family ties prevail even in the busiest of metropolitan centres.

Customs
You may plan to visit some churches or monasteries during your stay in Greece. As a sign of respect men and women should dress conservatively when visiting these places. In some monasteries it is not appropriate to expose bare arms or entry is not allowed to men or women wearing shorts.

Geography & Population
Greece is situated in southeast Europe on the Mediterranean Sea and covers a total area of 130.800 km2. The country is surrounded by the sea. The islands represent one fifth of the country’s area. There are about 1400 islands of which 169 are inhabited. The majority of the islands are scattered in the Aegean Sea between the Greek and Turkish coasts. The total coastline is around 13,676 km.
Greece has a population of 10,610,000 (2000) of which 3.7 million are located in Athens, the country’s capital. The majority of people in Greece live in cities along the coast, with over 50% living in, and around, Athens.

Getting Around Greece
Mainland Greece is well connected with a network of government and local buses. Bus depots are located on the outskirts of each city. The train network in Greece is rather limited. From Athens there are rail connections to Thessaloniki north of Greece through to the Balkan countries and Europe or eastwards to Turkey. A 2nd line goes into the Peloponnese region via Corinth and Patras.
The most popular form of transport to the Greek islands is by ferry, hydrofoil or high-speed ferry boats. The majority of these vessels depart from the port of Piraeus and link Athens on a daily basis with the Greek islands. For those with limited time there is a well established network of domestic flights to most of the major cities in Greece and the most popular Greek isles.

Island Hopping
The cheapest way to visit the Greek islands is to use the ferries. When booking ferries there are a few things you should keep in mind. The weather may affect the frequency of ferries and at times services may be cancelled. It is important that you reconfirm the ferry times the day prior to travel to avoid any disappointment.

Language
Greek is the main language of the country but most of the people associated with tourism and the younger generations currently practice English and sometimes German, Italian or French.

Newspapers
There are 18 daily newspapers in Athens. Foreign press can be found in the cities and in the popular islands.

Politics
The democratic Greek system works like a parliamentary republic with a president at the head of the state. The actual head of government in Greece is the Prime Minister and the chief of state second in charge.

Religion
98% of the Greek population belongs to the Orthodox church. The rest of the Greek population is Roman Catholic, Muslim and Jewish. Only Russia has such a proportion of Orthodox Christians. The Orthodox Church forms the third largest branch of Christianity.

Tipping
Tipping is common practice in most Mediterranean countries, however it is optional and only required if you have enjoyed the service.

Travel Formalities
You must at all times carry a valid passport. US citizens and Australian citizens do not currently require a visa to visit Greece if the stay in no longer than 3 months. No specific vaccinations are currently required for the Mediterranean region. However it is recommended that you check with your local doctor before departure for the latest updates.

The Public services are open from 08.00 to 14.00 from Monday to Friday. Private companies are opened from 09.00 till 17.00.

The shops are open
Monday-Wednesday- Saturday from 09.00 to 15.00
Tuesday-Thursday-Friday from 09.00 to 14.00 and 17.00 to 20.00.
These opening hours are not the same in the tourist areas where some shops may stay open all day long and even late at night.
